Shops at Columbus Circle

Last time I was in New York I hung out here after walking my feet off all over the city. It's an upscale mall in the Time Warner Center that has some nice spots to grab a pastry and chill with a coffee. Also, being so close to Lincoln Center there is a venue here for Jazz should you be so inclined. I was content to just sit and people watch. One thing about New York, this is the perfect place to people watch.

Hartford at Night

This is from a series of night photos I shot hand held in downtown Hartford CT. The camera I used is the Sony A7s, which I believe has the highest ISO rating in the world. Basically that means that it's extremely sensitive so that it can see things in the dark. Certainly I could have taken these with another camera, but I would have needed to use a tripod. That's not such a bad thing, but I love the idea of walking around with just a camera at night and doing street photography. I guess you could say it opens up a whole new world in terms of shooting scenes at night. In any case, I'm going to a lot more of this in the months to come.

Vancouver Taxi Stand

If you live in Vancouver or you’ve ever visited you know this taxi stand, it’s in front of Canada Place and you can pretty much always get a cab from here. It’s at a confluence of the subway, ferry and cruise ships. But once in a while when things are slow they end up waiting here for the next fare and if you look you’ll notice them all reading or surfing on their phones. That’s not so unusual, we all do that, fill up our spare moments with info from our cell phones. In fact, they’re not really cell phones anymore are they, more like digital appendages?

Christmas Lights and Building

It's time for a few Christmas lights, which are everywhere. As I squint my eyes the lights of the trees blend with those of the building behind. I have to scratch that abstract itch every now and again. Now I feel much better, and I hope you do too.

Hartford State House

On a chilly evening a few weeks ago I stood here in front of the statehouse in Hartford Connecticut. I think because of the cold the entire property was deserted which afforded me an opportunity to walk around it at will with my tripod. Only later when I processed this did I notice the flags at half mast. The ornate dome and outer walls reminded me of buildings I've seen in Germany. In any case, despite the lack of any anyone around I'm guessing the guards watched me on security cameras as I walked around the building. They probably figured I was harmless and it was just too cold for them to do anything about it.

Time for a Break

Riverwalk in Bradenton Florida. It's the end of the week and I'm clean out of brain cells. As I lean against an allegorical lamp post and take a little break I think it's time to slow down, change gears and regroup before another crazy week. I hope you are getting a little break as well; we all work so hard. Nice to just chill once in a while. Dontcha think?

Towers in the Night

This is the Soldiers' and Sailors' Memorial Arch near the capitol building in Hartford Connecticut. I took this a few nights ago in the twenty degree chill and so not too many people were out. However, as I set up for this shot someone starting walking towards me while singing quite loud. I sized up my situation but had nothing to worry about as the gentleman simply inquired about my photography. Turns out there was a concert, opera I think, just up the way and he was just walking home reveling in the moment. I, on the other hand quickly finished and made a hasty retreat to the warmth of my car.

Pinellas Point

This is a little spot across the bay from me known as Pinellas Point. It's not that easy to find but you get glimpses of it driving over the bridge. And so, after about ten years of that I thought it was time to discover this. Well, that's a little fib because I wanted to go the other way but my wife suggested we look for it. So we did, and here it is, looking back at the bridge, after all those years. I have a nickname. It's Christopher Columbus. But that's another story for another day.

Early One Morning

On Anna Maria Island there are a couple of little towns that have a beach on one side and the inter-coastal waterway on the other which is where dozens of sailboats dock. Each sailboat has a rowboat that allows the occupants to row to shore. In fact you see that all up and down the coast; little rowboats on the shore waiting for their owners to row back to their sailboat. I was up at the crack of dawn in one such town and I notice this man and his dog heading back to the boat. Must have been a long night.

Sarasota Icon

The Ringling Bridge is not only an icon in Sarasota, it's a magnet for walkers, joggers and everyday sightseers. It traverses the warm water of the inter coastal waterway as it heads out to the Gulf of Mexico and it's not uncommon to see dolphins and manatee swimming by. I don't think I'll ever get tired of coming here, so you're sure to see more photos from here. Stay tuned.
