Last Friday, Battery Park in lower Manhattan was the place to be as the week ended with a warm breeze and spectacular sunset. I was busy clicking away when this couple came up and asked to take their picture and email it later. When I got home I realized that I had them out of focus. Arrrrg!!! Lucky enough I had taken this shot with them in it a few minutes earlier. It was an amateur mistake, but hopefully they can take this image as a memory of that moment together during one of the most romantic sunsets of the season.
Just Before Sunset
Usually, due to procrastination, I arrive at the beach only a few minutes before sunset. This time is was thirty minutes. For me that’s good. Anyway, a couple of years ago I shot this same scene. My style changes over time and so revisiting the same location provides an opportunity to see it with new eyes. I’ll probably come here again in another year or two and do the same thing all over again. And who knows what it’ll look like then.
Clam Digger
A gentleman digs for clams along the causeway the other day. I was on my way to a restaurant near the beach with my wife and a friend when I quickly pulled over to get this shot. The people in my car must think I’m crazy. I think I am a little crazy when it comes to pictures. At least I wasn’t on a mountain road, now that would be CRAZY.
Sarasota Bay Fishing Pier
Last night I headed down to the fishing pier in Sarasota to catch the colors and take a few photos. As usual there were a lot of people fishing and as usual there was a lot of nice things to see. I shared a photo with some friends from my iPhone however one was in Japan, and so the same sun that was setting for me it was just rising for him. Small world, isn’t it.
Half Moon Bay
Urban Sunset
Because I live in Florida there’s water everywhere. Inlets, bays, waterways, rivers, …the list goes on. So this is an urban sunset, meaning that I just happen to be driving by the water and pulled over to take a picture. Every day the sun sets on urban areas, but somehow the fact that there’s a body of water makes it just a little bit special. Don’t you think so?

Coquina Beach Sunset
Earlier today I read that this beach was rated number five in the “Top Ten Island Beaches for Perfect Sand” by Conde Nast Traveler. I thought to myself, hey, that’s MY beach. Fortunately we had nice clouds so I headed down this evening for a shoot. I’ve taken a lot of pictures of this beach, it’s by far my favorite. No matter how many times I come here the results are always the same, I go home relaxed and feeling much better.

Benderson Park
In Sarasota we have a new world class rowing facility called Benderson Park. This is the far side one evening as I walked around it with my dogs. Right next to this scene is a sign warning of the local alligator that lives here. So, one eye in the viewfinder, one eye on the water, and desperately listening for any sounds as I snapped this and moved on. Sometime I just have to wonder about the things I do to get a good picture.

Emerson Point Quickie
Whenever I need a quick sunset but don’t have the time to drive to the beach or someplace for the “perfect shot”, I head down the street to Emerson Point for a little quickie. It’s a little peninsula that points west into the Gulf of Mexico and no matter how many times I go there, it never disappoints, it’s my secret sunset “go to”. Only it’s kind of an open secret, I almost always run into another photographer and half a dozen others who just come to watch the spectacle.

The Sun Sets Over the Biltmore Estate
I took this last November at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina. The biggest impression I had was of the size of the place, thousands and thousands of acres of lush rolling hills, vineyards and horse pastures for as far as you can see. I think I’ll come back here this year and spend a little more time. Or better yet, how about I come back in a different life and live the life of an aristocrat. That probably won’t happen. However, after seeing this place I’d settle for the life of a stable boy, just being here is it’s own reward.
