Venice Pier

This is the Venice Pier which is attached to Sharky’s on the Pier in Venice Florida. A couple of wooden versions of this washed away in hurricanes and so they built this newer stronger concrete version. It’s such an iconic setting that we always bring guests here. When my sister-in-law was down she lamented she hadn’t seen any dolphins, however the day we came here we spotted a small pod frolicking at the end. Florida’s west coast is dotted with establishments like this, but this is one of our favorite. Everything just seems to add up.

Through The Palms

As I write this there are storms across much of the Unites States and winter has made an early entrance. But in some places such as Florida’s west coast you can still find people on the beach or enjoying a sunset. It’s no wonder the population of Florida explodes this time of year. If I lived up north and had the means I’d come down here also. Fortunate for me I live here and this weekend I was outside at the Sarasota Fine Arts Festival. This shot is from just south of Sarasota in Nokomis which is a community with an awesome beach among other things. Anyway, at the festival I got to show some of my photos (similar to this) of the area and meet some of you in person. Even though it was warm, that was pretty cool.

Siesta Key Afternoon

I headed down the road to Siesta Key from my home in Palmetto hoping to catch a good sunset. The clouds are so dynamic that you never know what to expect and as it turned out there was no sunset, however the colors and clouds still put on a good show. It rains so often in summer that most people just ignore it. It rarely last more than fifteen minutes and then you just continue going about your business. Of course I’m making liberal use of the word “business” because that’s about the furthest thing from anyones mind. However the folks on this broken down pier were engaged in the business of fishing, the folks behind me were engaged in the business of sunset watching, and I was engaged in the business of taking it all in and snapping some photos. Have your people contact my people and we’ll do business.

Sarasota Sunrise

I came here to Island Park in Sarasota one morning to capture the sunrise. It’s a great location for capturing the sunset but I figured I’d try the opposite. As a photographer I try to look in the opposite direction to catch a different perspective. That’s not as easy as it sounds, I think we’re hardwired to look ahead. In fact that’s the byline for my website, “photography with just enough perspective”. But of course, like everything else, that’s a lot easier said than done. And looking in the other direction doesn’t always mean I’ll always see something interesting, but if I make a habit of it, once in a while it works. Life metaphors aside, right after taking this the only thing I was looking for was a cup of coffee from Duncan Donuts.

Califlorida

This is the scene just outside the Califlorida Tiki Bar in Siesta Key Florida. The name caught my attention because I’m from California and now live in Florida. I guess you could say I’m a Califlorida boy. I love the mountains of California and the beaches of Florida, what’s a guy to do? I came here this evening to capture a little of the relaxed nightlife. I think Siesta Key is one of those places that reminds me of a Jimmy Buffet song. It’s really easy to relax here and it’s what everyone does very well. If you go to New York City, everything is go go go, and so when in Rome,… And here in Siesta Key, one of the things folks do really well is frequent little tiki huts and outdoor establishments such as this. I can hear Jimmy now, wasting away again in Califlorida-ville. I’ll keep my day job.

Venice Pier

This is Venice Pier on Florida’s west coast. A couple of weeks ago I found myself here with camera in hand. This is a really cool pier and at the foot of it is Sharky’s restaurant which is a must see if you’re visiting the area. This is one of those places we take our guests when they come down to visit. The combination of restaurant and pier on the beach in Florida is always fun. In fact, I was just talking to some friends about how we need more piers so that everybody can walk out to take it all in or go fishing for the afternoon. Of course the reason I really want more piers is so I can take pictures of them at sunset. Maybe one of these days I’ll try fishing off a pier instead, or maybe not.

Squint 2

This is another shot of a sunset in Sarasota Florida I got a couple of months back. For this and the other I was awestruck at the colors and it still ranks as the most beautiful sunset I’ve ever seen. I have this idea that if you squint, maybe things will look a little different. Well of course they will and I suppose it’s just a metaphor for changing my focus, seeing something in a different way. I think sometimes I squint with my mind, I try not to focus on the details of all going on around me. It’s not a matter of tuning things out so much as paying attention to other things that might be there. But then, the cat meows and I forget was thinking about.

Ringling at Night

Sarasota was once the home of John and Mable Ringling and to this day the Ringling circus is still headquartered here. Not only that, there’s a Ringling College of Art and Design, the Ringling Museum and this, the Ringling Bridge. It seems everywhere you go here in Sarasota there is either a street, bridge or statue in tribute to this giant of his time. My favorite Ringling is this bridge. I don’t know why, but I feel obliged to come here every few months and take a picture of it, this time at night. Maybe one day I’ll open up a coffee shop near here and display all my photos of the bridge. But in the meantime, I’ll continue to use Starbucks.

Sarasota Sunrise

As the sun rises in the east in Sarasota Florida it rises over the city. Most people think of Florida as a place to retire with warm weather year round. That’s true, but Sarasota has a younger crowd as well due to the colleges in the area, and so every morning before dawn the streets and bridges are full of people out for a jog or walk, or in my case, taking pictures of the sunrise. The waters are always clear, mostly warm, and you can’t go too far without running into a Starbucks. What’s not to like?
