Liz Magor’s Light Shed

This is a work of public art by Liz Magor called the Light Shed in Vancouver’s Coal Harbour district. If nothing else it’s striking when you come upon it or even notice it from a distance. I’ve taken pictures of this as have many others from the opposite perspective looking out across the harbour. If you Google images of this you’ll see what I mean. However, one night while watching the ghostly lights illuminate from it’s windows I got the idea to shoot back towards the city. Not sure if there’s a point in all this, however when I think of one I’ll get back to you.

Bridges

Bridges is a trendy restaurant in Vancouver’s Granville Island. It’s a cool place because in summer you can sit outside and be surrounded by the lights of the harbor, the two main bridges in to the city and the lights of the city at night. For some reason I was intrigued by how many people arrived here this evening by bicycle. Somewhat reminiscent of a european city don’t you think? Anyway, I see this when crossing over the Granville or Burrard bridges in a cab back to the airport and finally managed to get close enough for a photo one evening while exploring. Silly me, I just realized why it’s called bridges.

English Bay Dusk

Back, way back, way way way back in summer I captured this from Vanier Park in Vancouver one evening. I just love how long the days are in summer up north. Right now it’s the opposite. Basically you get about twenty six minutes of sunlight a day, and that’s only a slight exaggeration, if you live there you’re nodding your head now. But in summer the days are long and people are like bears out of hibernation, constantly outside on the hunt and soaking up every ray of light. If my memory serves me, I captured this around eight or nine at night. You would think being outside so much you’d get a little tired but it’s just the opposite, at least for me. But now, with so little sunlight it seems I get tired faster. Maybe I have some bear in my blood.

No Christmas Trees

Florida has a lot of things and Christmas tress aren’t one of them. If you need a Christmas tree it’ll be imported or plastic. On the other hand, we have plenty of Christmas Palms. Everyone down here is frond of decorating the palms with lights, it’s quite the sight. In fact, this evening we’ll probably do our annual drive down Longboat Key to see all the decorated palms. It seems to me that Santa might get a little warm in that big red coat down here, but then he flies at altitude and with the wind chill and all, … I’ll bet Florida is a nice stop for him, long enough to warm up, throw back a couple of Mohitoes and then off to colder climes. Merry Christmas to All.

Passing Train at Dawn

Last summer I took a rail trip through the Canadian Rockies. It was nothing short of spectacular and a great way to travel, I highly recommend it. As we travelled through the night I kept waking up every hour or so, I was too excited to sleep and didn’t want to miss a thing. I think it was around four or five in the morning that dawn started to break and as it did I grabbed my camera to capture the rich colors as they broke over a valley. This is the shot of that dawn and, just by chance, another train going in the opposite direction. More proof that half of photography is just showing up, or in my case, waking up.

Night on the Water

I took one last photo as dusk gave way to night and I headed back to my car and then home. Before I left I noticed the faint light of a small fishing boat a mile or two offshore and tried to imagine the scene from out there. Perhaps the light of houses along the shore. In any case, late last night I was driving along this same road and saw a fisherman coming in from sea with his small boat. I don’t know why but that got me thinking there is no way I would be out in the Gulf of Mexico in such in a small boat at night, yet hundreds do it every evening. And so I silently acknowledged his courage and fortitude and thanked him for the fish tacos I just had for dinner.

Beach Dunes

In Bradenton Beach Florida we have nice sunsets, and even when we don’t there’s always something to take a picture of. I thought a shot from about four feet inside these dunes would be nice and so started to set up my camera. Bad idea. Turns out the plants in these dunes produce a prickly burr that’s as sharp as any I’ve ever seen. So I figured as long as I didn’t move around I’d be okay. Wrong again. It seemed like the burrs started attacking me and attached themselves to my sandals, t-shirt, legs and shorts. So I finished the shot quickly and walked to my car in darkness where I began detaching the burrs one by one which took about 20 minutes. They were even attached to the bottom of my sandals. As far as natural defenses go, those dunes mean business. A couple of days later near the lifeguard stand I found a sign that indicated this is a “Blue Beach” which means a high degree if environmental awareness and protection is practiced here and, …the dunes are off-limits. I think I learned my lesson. Dunes 1, Me 0.

Califlorida

This is the scene just outside the Califlorida Tiki Bar in Siesta Key Florida. The name caught my attention because I’m from California and now live in Florida. I guess you could say I’m a Califlorida boy. I love the mountains of California and the beaches of Florida, what’s a guy to do? I came here this evening to capture a little of the relaxed nightlife. I think Siesta Key is one of those places that reminds me of a Jimmy Buffet song. It’s really easy to relax here and it’s what everyone does very well. If you go to New York City, everything is go go go, and so when in Rome,… And here in Siesta Key, one of the things folks do really well is frequent little tiki huts and outdoor establishments such as this. I can hear Jimmy now, wasting away again in Califlorida-ville. I’ll keep my day job.

Whistler Brewing Company

One evening I was walking along the waterfront in a area known as Coal Harbour, its a residential section with outdoor eateries and a great view of Vancouver Harbour. The atmosphere of the place is enhanced by these water fountains and a bunch of red umbrellas. Funny thing is I thought the name of the place was the Whistler Brewing Company on account of the name printed on all the red umbrellas. Not until a while later did I realize that these umbrellas are all over the city in quite a few outdoor cafes. So I looked it up on Google Maps as I’m writing this since I still didn’t know the real name, and it’s “The Mill Marine Bistro & Bar”. To me however, it will always be the “Whistler Brewing Company”.

Taking It All In

This is False Creek in Vancouver where I sat one evening to take in the sights of the city. Seems there’s so much to see that you have to take it all in one little chunk at a time. If you have nothing better to do (or even if you do) you can just sit here on a bench and scan from left to right. I’ve spent a lot of time walking around here at night and it feels safe, lot’s of people do it, strength in numbers. The other thing is that if I walk too far I can always catch the subway or a cab, the city is about as cosmopolitan as they come. And I thought Cosmopolitan was a cocktail, silly me.
