Sinclair Centre

This is a shot of the iconic Sinclair Center in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia. Vancouver has such an abundance of modern skyscrapers but in an amongst them are gems like this, reminiscent of another time. Cities like this that have not lost touch with the past are probably better for it on a number of different levels. If buildings could hear, I’d like to tell the newer sleeker ones to respect their elders while pointing at this. There you have it, I have a sense of architectural heritage and at times I might just be stark raving bonkers. 😉

Reflection

Early morning reflected in the widows of the Loft in Vancouver’s Coal Harbour. Refections sometimes produce an effect of separation that’s not really there, but allows our minds to believe it is, producing perspective, hopefully for the better. I wonder what the perspective of the early morning crew was as they saw me taking pictures of the reflections in their windows. Something I’ll never know.

Edith Cavell Meadows

This was taken from Edith Cavell Meadows in Jasper National Park. It’s hard for a photo to convey the proper perspective but the peak is about another thousand meters above my position. From the top are a couple of glaciers running down the slopes and like everything in the Canadian Rockies, scales are quite large and hard to convey. For this I set my camera down on some rocks to capture a bit of the moraine in the foreground. In any case, Edith Cavell was a nurse during WWI who was credited with saving the lives of soldiers on both sides and then executed by Germany. This great peak is a monument to her courage and humanity.

Garden Hideaway

It’s nice to have a little hideaway where you can go to get away from it all, if just for a bit. A break now and again to fill up on your own thoughts and musings and not those of everyone and everything around you. I get that when I ride my bike or walk the dogs. For some, this little garden under a bridge in the middle of a large bustling city. I happened upon this and almost walked by when I realized what it was, a little garden hideaway. And when I entered, even though I was only steps from the street it seemed somehow quiet, somehow peaceful and the feeling stayed with me for a while after I left. I don’t know how that’s possible, but it is, and it’s good enough for me.

The Proposal

When in Vancouver I almost always walk through Stanley Park. I overheard someone say recently that it was voted the number one park in North America and I think I’d have to agree. Anyhow, you’ll notice I post a lot of pictures from Stanley Park including this which was taken around sunset at Hidden Lagoon near end of summer. Just before I took this I walked past a big willow tree along the lagoon which was decorated with photos of a young couple, candles, flowers and an intimate picnic with cheese and a bottle of wine. Someone was standing guard awaiting the arrival of the couple and it was my strong impression that a proposal was to be made this evening. I’ll never know for sure, but supposing that did happen, then it happened with this sunset, and so I would guess it was a very special evening indeed.

Moraine Lake

Moraine Lake is near Lake Louise in Banff National Park, Alberta Canada. I haven’t been to enough lakes in Canada, but of those I have this one is the most beautiful. When I lived in Canada many years ago a painting of this scene was on the back of the twenty dollar bill. I always thought that was Lake Louise which you can argue is equally beautiful and a somewhat similar landscape. It’s hard to impress you with how impossibly high these mountains rise above the lake, this picture does little justice to the real thing. My inadequate words aside, I’ll just leave it to your imagination, because that’s probably the only way to fathom the scale and majesty of this scene until you go there yourself.

Rundle Lounge

No trip to Banff in Alberta Canada is complete without a visit to the Banff Springs Hotel. This is the Rundle Lounge where I imagine many VIPs have sat and discussed, well whatever VIPs discuss. My musings aside, the grandeur of the place is enhanced by the Canadian Rockies just outside. I took this early in the morning before it was crowded, but later that day a Royal Canadian Mountie in a red uniform and wide brim hat was in the lounge talking to some children. The children were wide eyed and I too was a little impressed. What a nice gesture to have these legendary officers come here and mingle with the guest and pass on a little legendary Canadian hospitality.

It's patterned after a Scottish castle and the interior exudes old world charm and architecture. Harbour Sunrise

In addition to cruise ships, a convention center and sight seeing, Vancouver Harbour is a busy shipping port. This morning I focused my lens on the industrial side of things as the sun was rising behind the cranes. Despite all the boat and seaplane traffic, the water remains crystal clear. I’m not sure how they manage that but thankfully they do. In any case, if you’ve ever seen pictures of English Bay (including my own) which surrounds Vancouver, you’ll notice many container ships docked offshore. My guess is they are waiting to take on a shipment of containers from here and head back out to sea. If you climb up one of the surrounding mountains and look back, you’ll see these ships lined up end-to-end for miles out into the bay. The first time you see them it’s quite a site, but in time you grow accustom to their presence and you almost forget they’re there. Day in, day out, they file in and out this port and this was just the start of another busy day.

Memories of Lake Louise

If I had this view out back I’d never leave home. Nonetheless, this is the view you see from the Chateau Lake Louise in Alberta Canada. The last time I was here the lake was frozen and I was with a climbing party where we scaled a frozen waterfall towards the back on the right. It was an all day affair and since I was not qualified to lead I stayed below as the lead climber secured a route up the fall. If you can imagine being chained to a rock in subzero temperatures followed by brief periods of adrenalin rush, that would pretty much summed it up. Aside from that, my other memory is of how good the peppermint schnapps tasted once we finished. Our party must have been quite a site as we walked into the five-start hotel outfitted with ice axes, crampons and all manner of climbing gear. In fact, it was probably a common sight as this is a popular winter sport destination. Anyway, back to the present day. Winter or summer, the view here is about as good as it gets.

Tangle Creek Falls

This last summer I took a trip down Highway 93, the Columbia Icefields Parkway in Alberta Canada. It’s no wonder it’s considered one of the most scenic highways in the world. I’ve been on Highway 1 in California and driven through Yellowstone in Montana and Wyoming, however never have I seen such breathtaking views for so many miles. This was just one of many stops and I think that if I didn’t have a day job I’d still be here photographing. Nonetheless, I’ll surely come back here, if not already in my dreams.
