Called Wick beach by the locals this is a classic “long beach”, meaning it’s really long. A great opportunity for me to pull out the long lens and look for interesting perspectives. It rained for a couple of days and this was the last band of rain clouds coming out of the Pacific, and trailing was blue sky and warm temperatures . A favorite spot for local surfers as well as beachcombers like me.
Logs Along the Coast
Tomorrow I’m taking a ferry from the mainland to Vancouver Island. All along the coast are ferry terminals like this one at Horseshoe Bay. I took this shot a few months back and I was intrigued by the big logs along the shore. Logging is big here so maybe these are the remnants of that or just trees along the coast that succumed to the elements. Nevertheless, summer is winding down and everyone seems to be frantically enjoying the last of the good weather before the short rainy days of winter return. For now, that’s a distant concept and there’s much to do on this long weekend in British Columbia. Happy Friday everyone.

Siesta Key Lifeguard Stand
When I showed up at Siesta Key beach it was the end of the day and so the lifeguards had already left. However a lot of people were still there, most waiting for the sun to finally set, a common ritual here in Florida. Reminds me of watching the credits roll, you stay to the very end, but I digress. So I walked around snapping shots that I thought were interesting until the very end. About half of the folks got up to leave yet I was surprised by how many people were staying on the beach even in the dark. In fact I saw people coming to the beach to setup their chars in the dark. I suppose that when the weather is warm, you may as well stay for the second show. 😉

Afternoon at the Beach
This is Siesta Key Beach which is a short drive from my home in Florida. A couple of years ago this was rated the number one beach in the United States. Let’s just stop and think about that for a moment. Somebody actually has a job to go around and pick the best beach. Really? I very much want that job. But I digress. There’s always something fun going on here, I noticed they were set up for a duathlon the next morning and they also have drum circles that gather here every so often. I just thought it was cool how a bunch of friends decided to come here and play volleyball on this afternoon. In any case, I’ll leave you with this scene while I go fill out an application for that beach rating job.

Jensen Beach Snack Bar
Its just after sunrise so I had this place to myself. Jensen Beach is on Florida’s east coast and like the west coast where I live the wave are gentle. I expected them to be a little larger, not sure if that was just due to calm weather or what. I don’t think there are any places in Florida where we get the waves like California or Hawaii. Even so there are a lot of surfboard shops. Maybe those surfboards are for novices like me. In any case this cool little beach town has a little bit of history and a whole lot of open beach for doing whatever, like maybe gentle surfing.
Gentle Waves
These are the gentle wave of Florida’s Gulf Coast. The water is warm, the wave are gentle, what more could you want? This is the stump of an old tree blown down in a hurricane years ago. I suppose then the waves were big but then it’s soon forgotten as the pace of life returns to it’s normal pace, which is about two speeds below slow. 😉

Heron Rocks Pier
This Heron walked in front of my camera as I was composing this shot, hello! It’s funny because years ago when I lived in Ontario Canada we use to go up to what’s known as “cottage country” in the summer. And once in a long while you’d see a Heron like this, but usually from across the lake. It was a big deal, you didn’t forget. Now that I live way south of the 47th parallel, I see them all the time, up close and personal. And heaven forbid you have fish or something they want. I wonder if they have two personalities, a shy one for when they’re up north and a bold one for when they’re in Florida.
Fun at the Beach
Watching the Beach
So this is the season when we get a lot of lightning. By “a lot”, I mean, …at this time of year this part of Florida gets more lightning than any place on earth. At least that’s what I heard, but I’m too lazy to look it up and back up my “facts”, but I think it’s true. On a typical afternoon I can look out the window and see a flash almost every second. Usually it’s a good ten miles off, but occasionally it’s right over the house. It really scares my dog. All of this is a long winded way of saying that when I took this, there was lighting overhead. This lady was a little braver than me, all I could do was snap a picture of her and then run back to my car. I think she did the same thing shortly thereafter.
Fort DeSoto Sunset
The northern beach of Fort DeSoto in St. Petersburg. The heron kept one eye on me while he fished for dinner, and I kept one eye on him as I lined up my shot. Maybe there’s a message in that or, not so much. Just a simple image of the beach to get us all in the mood for the weekend. Have a great one everybody.
