Sunday Morning at the Pier

This is the public pier at Anna Maria Island a couple of Sundays ago. I got here before sunrise yet there were people milling about, getting fishing poles ready or just watching the sunrise. And then just after sunrise a couple of dudes started swimming in the water which was warm and inviting. Then, if all that wasn't enough, a photography club showed up to take pictures of the pier. So just after sunrise on a Sunday when everyone should have been sleeping in, this place was buzzing. Of course I was there also so I'm not even sure what my point is. Nevermind.

Bradenton Beach Dunes and Restoration

A few weeks back I took this picture of Bradenton Beach from the dunes. Actually I've been doing a lot of that lately, ...but anyway, I couldn't help but be impressed by how wide the beach was, in an unsettling way. Kind of like when you see someone that changed their appearance slightly but you just can't put your finger on it. After I took a bunch of shots I was walking back to my car and met some guy that asked me about my camera and tripod. Turns out he's the photographer in charge of documenting the beach restoration. What that means is that they added about fifty feet of beach out into the ocean since the last time I was here. Sure enough, when I got home and checked my GPS geotags on Google Maps using satellite imagery, a bunch of my shots where taken from in the water. He said that if they didn't do that every few years Anna Maria Island and this beach would disappear. Here is a link to a picture I shot of the same area with about fifty feet less beach. Kinda makes you think, doesn't it?

Florida Draw Bridge

Of all the subjects I like shoot in in my home town, bridges are my favorite. This is one of two draw bridges to Anna Maria Island. Most bridges in the area are draw bridges and whenever I approach one in my car I secretly wish that the sirens would sound and I'd have to stop and wait. There's no better place to be stuck in traffic than on a draw bridge in Florida. Turn off the engine, roll down the windows, and watch the boats floating by. Real stressful.

Rod and Reel Sunrise

I took this shot at sunrise quite a few months ago not knowing that shortly after there would be a fire here. This is the Rod and Reel which is at the end of it’s own pier on Anna Maria Island in Florida. There is no question they have the best Grouper sandwiches around, not to mention the best scenery. It’s currently being rebuilt and I think they’re getting close to re-opening. I for one have been in Rod and Reel withdrawals and can’t wait to get back here for an afternoon of just kicking back to the best Florida has to offer.
