Last Stop Brooklyn

This weekend I was in New York City for a photowalk with some colleagues at the Arcanum. It was a busy weekend with many stops at iconic locations in lower Manhattan, midtown and Brooklyn. On Saturday we estimated walking between fifteen to twenty miles. This was the last stop of the evening after crossing the Brooklyn Bridge in the afternoon. It was a fitting end to a day that began before sunrise at the opposite end of this same bridge.

New Zealand Alps

About a year ago I was in a helicopter over the alps of southern New Zealand. It's been awhile since I posted a photo from there and so it's time to reminisce the adventure. The alps are nothing short of amazing as you can see. And somewhere up there are surely a few wizards or elfs; such as it is in middle earth.

Up For Air

A few days ago we went to Crystal River to meet friends and swim with the Manatees. There are warm springs in the area so during winter months the Manatees congregate while they wait for the ocean to warm up. Well, it's Spring and most of them are gone, back to the gulf to get some real food. However, there are still a few that linger along the river so it's still possible to see and swim nearby. Regardless, for me just spending a day on a boat is going to turn out good.

Driftwood House in Ucluelet, BC

This driftwood house is along the Wild Pacific Trail in Ucluelet. The West coast of Vancouver Island looks a lot like this, rugged coves, black rock and driftwood. I'm not sure who constructed this but it was no small undertaking. Maybe not a posh resort, but if you consider the mountains, ocean and stars at night it comes pretty close. In my estimation the only thing it needs is a campfire and some marshmallows.

Half Moon Bay

Last year while in Half Moon Bay we walked the beach at sunset. Beaches, waves and landscape of the pacific are so much more dramatic than the west coast of Florida where I live. I grew up in California, now when I return it all seems so new.

Driftwood on the Shore

Drive up the coast of British Columbia and driftwood is everywhere. It accumulates on the shore when storms toss it like little sticks. I admit I'm a little intimidated by that kind of power in nature. Imagine living along these shores a hundred years ago without modern convenience. In any case, on this present day afternoon some campers sat nearby taking in the tranquility of the this scene. A little snapshot of the rugged beauty I found just north of Vancouver.

Bok Tower

The Tower and Gardens were constructed almost a hundred years ago on what was then a barren hill of sand and dirt. Now it's a historic national landmark and a favorite of wedding planners. In fact there was a wedding about to begin as I took this shot. This is a beautiful spot and now that I know where it is I'll plan on coming here every now and then to see it in the different seasons. Not that we have a lot of seasons in Florida.

Lake Placid

While driving across central Florida we stopped at Lake Placid for a picnic lunch. I'm guessing the lake got it's name from the fact that it's mostly calm water which is what I saw that day. In any case I enjoyed a sandwich and taking pictures of the shore such as this. It was a calm and peaceful scene indeed.

Walk in the Park

A North Carolina forest last fall. The only sounds were the leaves beneath our feet, birds and the distant sounds of the river. After the sensory overload of everyday life I need a period of quiet from time to time. North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains has quiet and beauty for those who seek it out. It's no wonder so many creative people live hear, you can finally hear your own thoughts for a change.

California Pasture

A farm pasture in San Mateo County along the Pacific Coast Highway. I was on a stop over from New Zealand to Florida and had a day to drive around. I probably need to spend a little more time driving around here because there seems to be something scenic at every turn of the road, and there are a lot of turns.
