The other night I found myself driving north on the Pacific Coast Highway well after dark. That’s because I was driving south to enjoy the scenery and sunset hours earlier and on account of the natural beauty I couldn’t stop driving. Finally I came to a section before Hurst Castle and decided to turn back on account of some road construction and that I had a flight out of San Jose early in the morning. Along the way back I stopped many times to take pictures of the scenery. For me it was an epic adventure I’ll not soon forget. This is Bixby Bridge which was built in the 1930s. To get this I stood on the edge of a cliff in total darkness. Fortunately I had taken some similar photos hours before during daylight so I had an idea of how close to the edge I could get. Maybe not the wisest thing I’ve ever done, but I was in the zone and, well, it is what it is.
Under the San Francisco Bay Bridge

This weekend I’m in San Francisco for a photowalk with Trey Ratcliff and a bunch of friends from The Arcanum. Several hundred showed up, some as far away as Scotland and Australia which made my commute from Florida seem trivial. We walked along the Embarcadero and as we got closer to the Bay Bridge quite a few of us lingered here as we became fixated on the bridge. As you may already know I love to shoot bridges and this ranks up there among my favorite. In any case, the photowalk was a huge success and a great time was had by all including yours truly.
Ledo Beach Afterglow
Obtain Print
This was the scene a few hours ago at Ledo Beach in Sarasota Florida. After the sun went down it illuminated these clouds with a peachy yellow glow. It had the effect of a lantern, making everything brighter. A phenomenon I’d not seen before that lasted for about fifteen minutes. Anyway, I was fortunate to see it and have my camera ready. From what I could tell, the other people on the beach were just as amazed as I was.
Another Saturday Night
On Saturday night we went to South Beach for some Paella and atmosphere. If you’ve ever been you know we got plenty of both. Hot, electric, rhythm and energy all packed into a few blocks where everyone comes to strut their stuff and be seen. There is more life in a half block of South Beach than a mile of Miami. So we walked down the street and I snapped away so that I could bring a little bit of it home.

Afternoon Thunderstorms
Obtain Fine Art Print
Death, taxes and afternoon thunderstorms are among the few certainties of life. At least it is here in Florida during the summer. I think I would be more surprised if we didn’t get a storm in the afternoon. Like when I lived by the tracks then moved away and couldn’t sleep because there were no trains going by. Thunderstorms are a little like that. We ignore them. They make noise but we tune it out. But lucky for me I’m a photographer and I’m always on the lookout. I didn’t ignore this one. And now, I’ll lay back in bed and wait for the sound of the midnight train. Goodnight all.
Watching the Sunrise

Here I’m sitting on a dock watching the sunrise last year. Everything was quiet and despite the effort to get up early, I was glad to be here. If I could only manage to wake up early a little more often. I love to stay under the covers too much. But then, maybe I’ll try again tomorrow.
Downtown Hartford at Night
The streets of some cities are deserted in the evening as most people have left for the suburbs. That leaves plenty of opportunity for taking pictures of the architecture and lights which create a mood found only after the sun sets. This is a pedestrian bridge in Hartford Connecticut. I combined two images, one sharp one blurred, to enhance the seasonal lights of that chilly December evening. As I write this its summer and would gladly take a quick blast of cool are from the night I took this.
Pier at Dusk

This is the pier along the causeway on the way to the beach. A lot of locals prefer it because you can park right here and bring your dog. And so it was with me and my dog a couple of nights ago. We walked along the causeway at dusk taking in the colors and scenery as everyone else drove to and from the parking lots at the beach.
End of Another Day
If you drive up and down the gulf coast of Florida it’s amazing how many parks are named Sunset Park. But then you soon realize it’s for good reason. This is a picture of my wife sitting on a swing with our dog Mr. Wiggles at Honeymoon Island State Park in Dunedin Florida. It was our first time here and we lucked out with a great sunset. We had meant to leave earlier, but when we noticed the clouds and the sun we just had to stay an extra hour to take it all in. Mr. Wiggles was fine with that.
