This is just off Upper Red Rock Loop Road in Sedona. I was here for a few days and found myself on this road several times, either surveying the scenery or checking out the local parks. Cactus is everywhere and I especially liked how the morning sun creates a warm backlit glow. Of course the scenery of the surrounding mountains is everywhere and it’s what makes Sedona such an amazing place to visit.
Fisher Meadows Pond
I took this in Avon which is just outside Hartford CT. It was late December so there was a chill in the air as I arrived before dawn to walk around the pond. This was just after sunrise about halfway around. The best part of being here early is the stillness of the water and the reflections that result. I finished the hike and headed to the airport to return home to Florida for the holidays.
Tampa Bay from St. Petersburg Florida
The view from St Petersburg Florida as I looked out across Tampa Bay. In summer we go from wind a rain to a peaceful calm. This day happened to be one of the latter. The water on the bay was like glass as these sea birds snatch fish from the shallows. I waited for the perfect moment when the birds were in perfect position and took this picture. This is one of my favorite from the area.
Arrowtown Afternoon
Air Water Earth
I made up this rule (more of an idea actually) that I try to have at least three of the four elements in a landscape photo at the same time. If these clouds look a little funny it’s because I added a background of water. So by cheating a little (hey, they’re my rules so I can break them) I got my three elements; thus, the title of this photo.
End of Another Day
If you drive up and down the gulf coast of Florida it’s amazing how many parks are named Sunset Park. But then you soon realize it’s for good reason. This is a picture of my wife sitting on a swing with our dog Mr. Wiggles at Honeymoon Island State Park in Dunedin Florida. It was our first time here and we lucked out with a great sunset. We had meant to leave earlier, but when we noticed the clouds and the sun we just had to stay an extra hour to take it all in. Mr. Wiggles was fine with that.
Palms in the Park
Palms grow near the wildlife viewing boardwalk in Myakka River State Park. I grew up near the mountains in California where most parks have pines trees or redwoods. Not so here in Florida as pines would not withstand hurricanes. In any case, this boardwalk extends into a wetland were you can see all manner of birds like Herons, Egrets, Osprey, Hawks and Eagles. And just off on the left is Myakka Lake which is home to about five hundred Alligators. Definitely not California.
Bennett Park
So last I heard they’re going to build a water park here. This is right next to the freeway so I suppose it’s a good location as far as exposure goes. But I can’t help but feel a twinge of loss at another open space in this beautiful state. However, as hot as it gets here in Florida it doesn’t sound too bad. In any case, this is the “before” shot. Not sure how the “after” shot will end up looking.
You Lookin at Me?
Does anyone know what type of bird this is? I saw this fella at the Tampa zoo. His half whimsical half challenging look seemed to say (in a Robert De Niro voice) “you looking at me?”. Something tells me he was no pushover. I’m no dummy, I know when I’ve met my match.
