Bixby Bridge on the Pacific Coast Highway

The other night I found myself driving north on the Pacific Coast Highway well after dark. That's because I was driving south to enjoy the scenery and sunset hours earlier and on account of the natural beauty I couldn't stop driving. Finally I came to a section before Hurst Castle and decided to turn back on account of some road construction and that I had a flight out of San Jose early in the morning. Along the way back I stopped many times to take pictures of the scenery. For me it was an epic adventure I'll not soon forget. This is Bixby Bridge which was built in the 1930s. To get this I stood on the edge of a cliff in total darkness. Fortunately I had taken some similar photos hours before during daylight so I had an idea of how close to the edge I could get. Maybe not the wisest thing I've ever done, but I was in the zone and, well, it is what it is.

Under the San Francisco Bay Bridge

This weekend I'm in San Francisco for a photowalk with Trey Ratcliff and a bunch of friends from The Arcanum. Several hundred showed up, some as far away as Scotland and Australia which made my commute from Florida seem trivial. We walked along the Embarcadero and as we got closer to the Bay Bridge quite a few of us lingered here as we became fixated on the bridge. As you may already know I love to shoot bridges and this ranks up there among my favorite. In any case, the photowalk was a huge success and a great time was had by all including yours truly.

Sarasota Dawning

I don't know why I don't come down here more often. That didn't sound right, almost like a clumsy pick up line. What I meant to say, ...oh never-mind, you know what I meant. But anyway, this is one of those locations in Sarasota where it's impossible to take a bad photo. I could pretty much hold the camera up and press the shutter and I'm going to end up with something good. At least that's what I tell myself, your result may vary. So even if you think this is a nice shot, keep in mind it was easy. Not easy as in a pickup line, but you know what I mean.

Afternoon Thunderstorms

Death, taxes and afternoon thunderstorms are among the few certainties of life. At least it is here in Florida during the summer. I think I would be more surprised if we didn't get a storm in the afternoon. Like when I lived by the tracks then moved away and couldn't sleep because there were no trains going by. Thunderstorms are a little like that. We ignore them. They make noise but we tune it out. But lucky for me I'm a photographer and I'm always on the lookout. I didn't ignore this one. And now, I'll lay back in bed and wait for the sound of the midnight train. Goodnight all.

Skyway Afternoon

I shot this on a calm afternoon with a few wispy clouds above. I would have preferred a little more drama in the clouds but it wasn't to be. This is only a few minutes away from my home, I cross this way several times a week. This bridge connects St Petersburg with Manatee County where I live. All ships coming in or out of Tampa Bay pass through here. Now they're saying that at four hundred feet the bridge isn't high enough. Its time to go buy a new bridge.

Under the Bridge

The view looking north from under the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge. This was taken at sunrise and was the starting point of an all day photowalk with my fellow cohorts from the Arcanum. Twenty miles and fourteen hours later we ended up at the opposite side of this bridge shooting in the opposite direction. It was an epic day to say the least.

Love Locks

Love locks on the Brooklyn Bridge. I wonder if the day will come when these have to be removed. As far as I can tell the bridge seems pretty sturdy and I don't think the extra weight even registers. Moving along, how cool would it be to leave a lock and then return several years later to see it again? A funny little quirk of how we roll. Sentimentality is a cool thing when it comes out like this me thinks.

St Pete Pier and Clouds

The St. Petersburg pier is about to be rebuilt but until then it sits here unused. The architecture of the new pier has been the subject of a lot of discussion amongst the residents and local officials. So while they decide what to do I try and get a few more pictures before the cranes come in and it begins a makeover. Then, I suppose, I'll be out taking pictures of the new one. Me and everyone else in town.

Pier Before Dawn

The Bridge Street Pier in Bradenton Beach Florida. The bridge is adjacent to the pier and so at this early hour a few early commuters are crossing the bridge on the way to work. I took this about a month back just as the pier re-opened from an extensive renovation. A great place to hang out if you're ever in the area. And if you do come in the morning there is a restaurant here that opens early so you can sit with your cup of coffee and enjoy the scenery.

Brooklyn Dreamscape

A couple of weeks ago I was here with my fellow cohorts of the Arcanum. This was the end of a long day and I think sleep was not far from my mind. For me sleep is like this, things look normal, and then they start to slip, become glassy, and then before you know it you're gone. So that's why I call this a dreamscape, it feels that if I look at this too long I might just nod off over my keyboard. Good night all.
